The current political situation and the increasing social division have prompted me to address this issue and to focus on the things we have in common.
Coffee and Tea Talk
A project showcasing Turkish and German coffee and tea culture and its role as a cultural bridge.
The idea for my master’s project emerged when I learned that older generations in both cultures rarely went to therapy but instead met for çay or cofee and talked about their problems. Through my research and conversations with people of diferent generations, I realized how important this social space was. I understood that prejudices can only dissolve when people sit together at a table, listen to one another, discuss, and stay in dialogue. As a German-Turkish woman, the topic is personally, culturally, and politically relevant to me. Despite decades of migration history, many people with migrant backgrounds still experience discrimination, even though we have long been part of society. At the same time, both cultures have changed: traditions around cofee and tea have become more flexible and spontaneous, especially among the younger generation. This development connects both sides. By analyzing German-Turkish cofee and tea culture, I use these shared connections as a foundation to develop a product that fosters encounters at eye level and makes cultural closeness tangible.
