Female artists are still severely underrepresented today. With my project, I want to highlight Paula Modersohn-Becker and her art.
Life-size
Animated short film about the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker
February 1906. The artist Paula Modersohn-Becker is frustrated in her marriage and
feels confined by the rural conditions of the artists' village of Worpswede. So one night
she packs her bags and flees to Paris.
Once there, she immerses herself completely in her art and creates some of her most
important works.
But when her husband Otto shows up at her studio, she is faced with the decision
between her artistic career and a secure convential life.
I first learned about Paula's life story a few years ago through a biography about her. This
also led me to take an interest in her art.
I was immediately fascinated: Paula's avantgarde works are in no way inferior to those
of her contemporary artist colleagues. Tragically, she died in 1907 at the age of only 31.
Today, she is rightly considered one of the most important female German painters, yet
hardly anyone in my circle of acquaintances had ever heard of her. So I decided to
portray a part of her life in my final project to celebrate her courage in pursuit of her art
and to hopefully make people more aware of her.
