As a symbol of freedom and wanderlust, the German Autobahn network is a cultural and historical monument of superlatives.
Entirely Linear
A bookazine about the Autobahn and its hundred-year history
The Autobahn – a living archive of German cultural history. The Grey aisle that cuts
uncompromisingly through the landscape is widely known. It evokes a wide variety of associations, but
few are aware of the complexity of this network in terms of its history, structure, and social relevance.
In my project, I focus on what remains hidden from view through the windshield – the often overlooked
perspectives of past generations, without which the route would not be what it is today: The asphalted
vision of a network of social connections tailored to individual transport; and at the same time a
showroom for German and international engineering.
Chronologically, the selected archive material guides us through the hundred-year history of a transport
revolution following the establishment of the automobile – from the first visions of a road reserved for
motorized traffic in the 1920s, through its appropriation by the Nazi regime and reconstruction after
World War II, to its expansion and use as military infrastructure during the Cold War and today's
approach to the Autobahn as part of cultural heritage.
