I was moved by the realization that so many women experience this, while their pain goes unnoticed.
A star is born
A photographic work of the unspoken experiences of pregnancy loss.
About one in three women loses her child during pregnancy. And yet most people know almost nothing about it. Especially in the early stages, you often hear: “Wait until the first twelve weeks are over before you tell anyone”—as if silence could protect you. From the outside, very little is visible during this time, but inside an entire world begins to form: Expectations, visions of a future, hopes. When this world suddenly collapses, it is far more than the loss of a child. It is the loss of a future imagined—one that would have changed a life. What remains is an emptiness that is rarely acknowledged, because so few can see it and even fewer talk about it. With my photographic work, I want to make these often invisible emotions visible: The wavering between hope and disappointment, between loneliness and connection, between retreat and the desire to still be seen. This project is an invitation to look, to listen, and to open up. It seeks to break the silence and give a voice to those affected—so that what so many experience no longer remains hidden.
