When I met the dancer Riha during my semester abroad in Seoul, it inspired me to combine my interest in Korea, dance, and flm in my own documentary project.
Riha
A documentary look at dance and identity between Seoul and Europe.
In my short documentary, I portray South Korean popping dancer Riha, who grew up in a meritocratic society where success seems more important than individuality. It was only through a trip to Europe, where she became part of a completely diferent, diverse dance world, that her pursuit of achievement and “correctness” transformed into a search for her own style, her own color. Not only as a dancer, but also as a person. Being a dancer myself, I could immediately relate to her enthusiasm for thediversity of styles and creative freedom in dance. Talking with her made me
realize that her story of self-discovery has signifcance far beyond the world of dance. My enthusiasm for dance as a form of expression has carried this project. With this documentary, I want to pass on a piece of it and hope that it does justice to Riha's journey and its complexity.
