I wanted to step outside my perspective as a local resident and see what happens when I enter a space in which I might carry my own fears and reservations.
Fear of Touch?
Photographic Approaches to People at Bremer Platz
In this project, I explore my own fear of touch, an inner distance that arises when a place or a way
of life feels unfamiliar. At Bremer Platz, I met people who are often defined solely by their drug
use. I wanted to understand who they are beyond that, and how my gaze changes when I truly
encounter them, let go of my distance, and allow myself to get to know a small part of their lives.
With my camera and in short conversations, I seek moments of closeness without crossing
personal boundaries. My work is deliberately personal: an attempt to reduce unfamiliarity and
openly document my view of a harsh reality.
The project is directed at people willing to tolerate ambiguity. I do not show Bremer Platz to
correct an image, but to make visible what I encountered there. For a moment, fear of touch
turned into closeness. Yet in the end, I return to my own world, while theirs remains the same.
