There is a very special closeness between twins. But how does identity develop when a life is shared from the very beginning?
To be two
A short documentary about pairs of twins and their lives between closeness and independence.
Our project is a short documentary about two pairs of identical twins. Emmi and Tilda, 14-year-
old girls, have never been separated for more than a day and share their everyday lives, even
though each pursues her own interests. RitSki and Gerd, 75-year-old men, have taken very
different paths in life yet share a deep connection through music. The wide age range shows
how the relationship between twins can shift across different stages of life and which forms of
closeness endure over decades.
Our inspiration arose from a fascination with this unique bond: twins touch on a cultural core—
the longing for deep connection as well as the fear of losing oneself.
The tension between closeness and individuality sparked our curiosity and raised questions
that reach far beyond the phenomenon of twinhood: Who am I when there is another version
of me? What is closeness without choice? Can you grow apart without losing each other?
